The use of no-spill design feeder/trainer cups
Background
The National Oral Health Promotion Group is a support group for those interested and working in the field of oral health promotion.
This position paper has been produced in response to the increasing number of enquiries received regarding the potential damage the non-spill design feeder/trainer cups may cause.
Following many months of discussion we summarized our findings. We now present this position paper for dissemination and discussion with those in the early years arena.
Aims of the position paper
The paper aims to:
- Review the problem of nursing bottle caries
- Discuss feeder/trainer cup designs currently on the market
- Identify oral health concerns regarding the non-spill design feeder/trainer cups
- Identify the concerns of other health professionals regarding the non-spill design feeder/trainer cups
- Discuss the issue of “it’s what you put in it”
- Provide criteria for an appropriate choice of feeder/trainer cup
- Provide appropriate guidelines for parents on using a feeder/trainer cup
- Propose the way forward.
